A shopVOX alternative for small sign shops
Published · Updated
If you run a 1–10 person sign shop and mostly need pricing, quotes, a job board and invoices, Grommetbook is a cheaper shopVOX alternative: $49/month per shop, unlimited users, no onboarding fee. shopVOX Express was $109/month plus $29 per user as of November 2026. It depends on what you use, though. Grommetbook is run through your own AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor), and it has no artwork proofing, inventory or payment collection. If you rely on those, or nobody in your shop wants to use an AI assistant, shopVOX is the better choice.

How setup is different
In shopVOX you build pricing formulas and product templates in settings screens. Some owners find that hard. One shopVOX reviewer wrote, in 2023, "We've been using the software for nearly two years and still haven't managed to set up pricing properly." A Signs101 member called it "very resource intensive to onboard" in 2024. Others say setup was fast, so this is not everyone's experience.
Grommetbook has no settings pages. You connect your AI assistant and hand it your pricing spreadsheet. It calls import_price_book, shows a dry run of the Materials, Rates and Products it will create, and saves only when you confirm. From then on you ask in plain words: "Quote Joe's Pizza two 4×8 coroplast signs with grommets."
What you keep
- A Price Book. Materials (with waste %), Rates (hourly labor and machine time) and Products (per sq ft, per linear ft, each or fixed, with markup, minimum and options).
- Prices you can check.
price_productshows each step: material cost with waste, rate hours, options, markup and minimum. Your AI assistant does not make up the number. The Price Book does the math. - Quotes with online approval.
draft_quoteandsend_quotegive you an approval link. Your customer approves online, and the name, IP address and time are recorded. A PDF is available. - A Jobs board. Stages: To do → In production → Ready → Installed/picked up → Invoiced.
- Supplier price changes in one sentence. "Oracal raised 751 by 6%" runs
reprice_materials. Products reprice. Quotes you already sent stay as sent. - Your data out.
export_invoices_csv(QuickBooks import layout) andexport_shop_data(everything, as JSON). - A read-only web viewer that shows everything, plus the history of which agent call changed what.
What you give up
- Artwork proofing and proof approval. shopVOX Express includes online proofing.
- A direct accounting sync today. shopVOX Express lists QuickBooks Online and Xero integrations. Grommetbook exports a CSV for QuickBooks now; direct QuickBooks Online invoice push is coming soon, and there is no Xero. See QuickBooks.
- Inventory, production scheduling, online payments or deposit collection, and sales tax beyond a flat rate.
- A mobile app and a standalone price calculator.
- A screen-based app your staff can click through. Grommetbook is used through an AI assistant; the web viewer is read-only.
When shopVOX is the better choice
- You need online proofing, inventory or e-commerce in the same system.
- You want a direct QuickBooks Online or Xero link working today.
- Your team prefers clicking through screens and does not want to use an AI assistant.
- You are a larger shop that wants CRM, account management and guided onboarding (shopVOX PRO).

Questions
- Is Grommetbook cheaper than shopVOX?
- For most small shops, yes. Grommetbook is $49/month per shop with unlimited users. shopVOX Express was $109/month plus $29 per user per month as of November 2026, so a 3-user shop pays $196. See pricing.
- Does Grommetbook do online proofing like shopVOX?
- No. Customers approve the Quote online, but there is no artwork proofing in v1. If proof approval is central to your shop, shopVOX is the better fit today.
- Can I move my shopVOX price list into Grommetbook?
- Give your AI assistant your pricing spreadsheet or exported price list. It runs import_price_book as a dry run first, shows you what it will create, and only saves when you confirm.
- Do I need an AI assistant to use Grommetbook?
- Yes. Grommetbook is run through an AI assistant that can connect to a remote MCP server, such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor. See Connect your AI.
