How to price vinyl banners per square foot

Published · Updated

To price a vinyl banner per square foot, work out your cost per square foot from the roll, add waste and ink, add print and finishing time (hems, grommets) at your hourly rates, apply your markup, and check the job against a minimum. With the example costs below, a 3×6 ft 13 oz banner costs $29.40 to make and sells for $58.80 at a 100% markup, about $3.27 per sq ft. It depends on your roll price, printer speed and market, and small banners come out higher per sq ft once finishing and minimums are counted.

The formula

  1. Square feet = width (ft) × height (ft).
  2. Material per sq ft = roll price ÷ (roll width in ft × roll length in ft).
  3. Material = sq ft × material per sq ft × (1 + waste %).
  4. Ink = sq ft × ink cost per sq ft.
  5. Print time = sq ft ÷ printer speed (sq ft per hour) × printer rate.
  6. Finishing = hem and grommet time × shop rate, plus grommet cost.
  7. Price = cost × (1 + markup %), then compare with your minimum.
  8. Price per sq ft = price ÷ sq ft.

Worked example: a 3×6 ft banner

All costs are example numbers, not supplier quotes.

Per sq ft$58.80 ÷ 18≈ $3.27/sq ft

Why small banners cost more per square foot

Here is a 2×4 ft banner with the same example costs, 4 grommets and 9 minutes of finishing.

Material with waste8 × $0.2222 × 1.10$1.96

That is why many shops price in size bands or use a minimum. One Signs101 member described pricing prints in six square-foot increments, with the price per sq ft dropping as size grows (2020).

Common mistakes

Doing it in Grommetbook

Set the banner up once as a Price Book Product: the vinyl and ink as Materials (vinyl with 10% waste), printer and shop time as Rates, a per-sq-ft method with a 100% markup and a $45 minimum, and grommets as an option. Then ask your AI assistant "quote a 3×6 banner with 8 grommets for Main Street Bakery". draft_quote prices it from the Price Book, and price_product shows each step. Your customer approves the Quote online.

What you give up: v1 prices linearly, with no automatic size bands or quantity breaks, and there is no standalone price calculator.

Questions

What is a good price per square foot for a vinyl banner?
It depends on your costs and market. Work it out from your roll cost, ink, print and finishing time, then markup. With the example numbers on this page, a 3×6 ft banner comes to about $3.27 per sq ft at a 100% markup.
Why does a small banner cost more per square foot?
Finishing and handling take about the same time on a small banner as on a big one, and a minimum often applies. Per-square-foot price falls as size grows.
Should grommets and hems be extra?
Either include them in the Product or price them as options. What matters is that their time and cost are counted somewhere.
Can Grommetbook show me how a banner price was worked out?
Yes. Ask your AI assistant to price the banner; price_product returns each step, from material with waste to markup and minimum.
